Tips for Making Sure Your Children Don’t Have Ticks

Hiking through the mountains is a great way to enjoy time as a family. Whether you are hiking through the desert, or the wooded lands, spending quality time with your kids outdoors helps raise great kids who are motivated to be adventurous. There are a few things that you have to be careful of when you are teaching your kids to spend time in nature. Ticks are one of the common insects that you need to teach your kids about and be aware of you as return home.

Checking for Ticks

It is really important that when you return home after an adventure where ticks may have been present that you are teaching your children how to properly check their bodies for these pesky bugs. You are going to need to help teach them what they are looking for and where they should look. It can be scary for little children to learn that there are ticks that could be stuck inside of their skin. You need to be careful not to make your children afraid of ticks, but while also teaching them that they need to be aware of ticks and how they can affect their bodies.

Removing Ticks

If you do find a tick on yourself or your child you need to properly remove the tick so there is no chance of blood poisoning or other issues associated with ticks nestling in your body. One of the most common ways to remove ticks is to light and match and then blow out the flame. While the match is still hot, you touch the end of the match against the part of the tick you can see nestled inside the skin. The heat from the match will cause the tick to quickly pull away from your skin. Once you have the tick removed from the skin you need to be sure that you properly dispose of the tick so they do not make their way back to the skin. You should also clean the area that was affected well to avoid any infections.

Where are Ticks?

Surprisingly there are ticks in many different places. While it is common to find them in bushes like sagebrush, they can also be found right in your backyard. If you live in an area where there is a great amount of wildlife living amongst you, there is a chance you also have ticks near. Ticks attach to different animals, like deer, and then fall off in places like your yard. If you think you may have ticks living in your yard you should contact a company like Freehold pest control. They can come into your yard and analyze if you have a problem or not. You do not want to risk your children playing in your yard and having the chance of a tick latching to their body and you being unaware of the situation. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry later.
